On 6 November 1906, Ole Olsen started his company, Nordisk Film, on a marshland plot in Valby on the outskirts of Copenhagen. His ambition was to provide entertainment for a wide market. The world’s oldest active film production company celebrates its centenary in 2006 and, to this day, continues to pursue the goal of its originator.
Nordisk Film has been part of Danish culture for 100 years. Products from the distinguished company, such as Matador, The Olsen Gang, Huset på Christianshavn, Wheel of Fortune, Good Evening Denmark, PlayStation®, Hitman, Midt om Natten, Mød mig på Cassiopeia and Terkel in Trouble, to name but a few, have provided daily amusement and entertainment for countless Danes. In recent years, Nordisk Film has also produced special-interest documentaries and popular entertainment in the other Nordic countries.
Nordisk Film will be celebrating its centenary throughout 2006, both internally and externally. The centenary is a milestone. Under the banner “We bring stories to life”, the polar bear will be roaring with all its might, stepping with giant paws into a new chapter of an amazing story.
The centenary celebrations will culminate in a festive event on November 6th 2006, but Nordisk Film will also celebrate its proud 100-year history with activities throughout the year. These will include a documentary series, the publication of a anniversary book and an opportunity for Danish movie-goers to select the film classics they want to see free of charge in Nordisk Film theaters during 2006. A movie canon for the people, chosen by the people.
The jubilee year will profile Nordisk Film as a company that creates and tells the best stories in moving images – and is set to do so for another 100 years.
