Melancholia receives important film critic award

This weekend the American film critics threw their judgement upon this year’s most important movies and Lars von Trier’s Melancholia played an important role.

At the restaurant Sardi’s in New York City, 58 film critics, who all are a part of The National Society of Film Critics, gathered for the annual celebration of this year’s greatest movies.

Lars von Trier gets important recognition
Melancholia, which is produced by Zentropa, received the award as “Best Picture” and Kirsten Dunst was appointed “Best Actress” for her role as the depressed bride, Justine. Besides of the two categories Melancholia was also nominated for “Best Director” and “Best Cinematography”.

Surprising outcome
The award is based on votes from each of the 58 different members of the NSFC. Prior to the event, Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life was expected to receive the greater number of votes in the category “Best Picture”, however, Melancholia defeated it by by one vote.
