Pioneer in the Oscar race

Yesterday it was announced that Pioneer is ready to compete for an Oscar nomination.

The three Norwegian feature films Erik Skjoldbjærg’s Pioneer, Wonderland directed by Arild Ostin Ommundsen and I am yours by Iram Haq was short listed as this year's Norwegian Academy Award candidates. One of these films has the opportunity to participate and compete in the category of best foreign language film.

Pioneer is set in the early 80's, at the beginning of the Norwegian Oil Boom. Enormous oil and gas deposits are discovered in the North Sea and the authorities aim to bring the oil ashore through a pipeline from depths of 500 meters. A professional diver, Petter is obsessed with reaching the bottom of the Norwegian Sea. Along with his brother Knut he has the discipline, strength and courage to take on the world's most dangerous mission. But a sudden, tragic accident changes everything. Petter is sent on a perilous journey where he loses sight of who's pulling the strings. Gradually he realizes that he is in way over his head and that his life is at stake.

Pioneer opened this year's Film Festival in Haugesund, before it has its Norwegian premiere this weekend and has its international premiere in the Special Presentation section at the International Film Festival in Toronto next week. The film has already received critical acclaim including a five star review in Dagbladet, Dagsavisen, Aftenposten og Bergens tidene.

"We've always had international ambitions with the film. Now that it has already been sold to many countries and has been selected to participate in Toronto it gives an extra boost to these aspirations. We have already talked to our U.S. distributor for the selection of Pioneer, and they of course want to help in the race so that the film ends up with an Oscar nomination" says the film's producer, Christian Frederick Martin.

Pioneer is distributed by Nordisk Film Distribution A/S and has its theatrical release in Norway Friday 30th of August.
