The debut film of Gustav Möller has become shortlisted by the Academy behind the Oscars and is now among the nine film, which are to compete for an Oscar nomination in the "Best Foreign Language Film"category.

It has been announced that the Danish feature film The Guilty has become Oscar-shortlisted in the category "Best Foreign Film.” The film joins eight other non-English films from around the world that could become nominated for an Oscar on January 22nd. The other eight films are Birds of Passage from Columbia, Never Look Away from Germany, Shoplifters from Japan, Ayka from Kazakhstan, Capernaum from Lebanon, Roma from Mexico, Cold War from Poland, and Burning from South Korea. The Guilty is the only debut film among the nine shortlisted films.

After being selected for the shortlist from a group of 86 other films, the probability of an Oscar nomination for the Danish film has increased significantly. The last Danish film nominated for "Best Foreign Film" was Martin Zandvliets Land of Mine, which was produced by Nordisk Film Production in 2016.

TRIUMPHANT EVENT FOR DEBUT FILM

The Guilty is the debut film of director Gustav Möller. He graduated from the Danish Film School in 2015 together with producer Lina Flint, who has produced the film at Nordisk Film Spring. It is the first feature film for Nordisk Film Spring. 2018 has been one long triumph for The Guilty, which had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival and received the festival’s international audience award. Since then, The Guilty has won 30 international awards and was a major cinema hit this past summer with over 140,000 sold tickets.

In the US, the film premiered earlier this fall and received great reviews. On the website Rottentomatoes.com - which collects all US and selected English reviews - it has a score of 99%, with 83 out of all 84 registered reviews being positive. The latest big news is that the film will have an American remake, with star Jake Gyllenhaal playing the role of Jacob Cedergren.

ABOUT THE GUILTY

In Gustav Möller's psychological thriller The Guilty, Jakob Cedergren plays police officer Asger Holm, answering an emergency call from a kidnapped woman. As the connection is suddenly cut off, it becomes a race against time to save the woman from her kidnapper, with the phone as his only tool. However, it soon it turns out that the crime is greater than Asger originally perceived.

The Guilty, produced by Nordisk Film Spring, takes place real time in a single night at a Danish alarm center. The impressive lead role as police officer Asger Holm is played by Jakob Cedergren. The Guilty is produced with support from the Danish Film Institute's talent scheme, New Danish Screen.

The 91st Academy Award will take place on February 24, 2019 (night to February 25th, Danish time).
